Thus is the situation which presents itself to Public Relations Association of Western North Carolina as it closes its 28th year. We would like to thank each of you from our hearts for three wonderful decades of public relations excellence.

To date, PRAWNC maintains its base operations, chamber membership, and member privileges. Our dues paying membership numbers ironically remain strong - even as member participation has dwindled over a period of several years.

The current fiscal year for PRAWNC continues through March 2012, but we regret that the board of directors has decided to disband the formal organization at that time due to the inability to fill vacant board positions, and lack of member participation. You'll see the changeover begin to take place now through March 30.

Please rest assured this decision was not made lightly. Four years ago, I had the privilege of serving on the "comeback board," the year PRAWNC faltered, then rallied. That excellent leadership has now been exhausted. None has risen to take its place, and the consensus is among all concerned that it's simply time to take our bows and leave the stage. The encore is over.

In 2012, you'll probably not see the work behind the scenes to gracefully conclude our ethical and financial commitments. I am beyond grateful to Vice President Chris Power, former board members Gary James and Jaime McKee, secretary Judy Davidson, and board member Brenda Murphree for standing fast long after we could see the writing on the wall.

The expression of gratitude would not be complete without honoring the memory of Jill Yarnall, our 2011 board member and most-awarded Best of the Mountains recipient. Jill worked tirelessly for PRAWNC as long as she possibly could. Our hearts grieved her passing. When all our commitments are met, it's our intention to use those resources appropriately in Jill's honor.

The newsletter will continue in 2012. I'd especially like to thank Debbie Griffith for offering to specifically publish the newsletter during 2012 so our members have an professional information source they can trust. Additionally, our existing email list will be maintained. An opt-in box on the website will allow us to continue to serve former members and friends of PRAWNC in this small but vital way.

What you will see also see in 2012 is the transition to a PRAWNC 'historic' website, a designated email address to answer questions, and an ongoing Facebook community to share news and job postings.

A separate committee will determine the future of Best of the Mountains, so please let us know if you have an opinion either way.

The hope of our board of directors is, from the cavern of this difficult decision, a PRSA chapter will rise, dragon-like and on fire with purpose, to grow and thrive in a future Asheville and WNC. To that end, a small group of like-minded individuals (not serving on PRAWNC's board) have been initiating conversations about making that happen. Please email us so we can put you in touch with those persons if that is a path you see yourself travelling.

My very best,
Sherri L. The codes are encoded with text, URL, phone numbers or other data. The QR code technology is already pretty common overseas (imagine that!), especially in Japan where it originated. The concept is still emerging here in the States as a new marketing trend, but seems to be catching on quickly. The use of QR codes is free of licensing, so the technology is available to use by any company. The codes are being used on menus, magazines, business cards, coupons, t-shirts- basically anything that can be scanned. The user scans the QR code and, through their phone, can automatically dial a phone number, visit a specific social media site or home page URL, set their phone calendar with an event (complete with alarm for a reminder), set the phone GPS with a physical address, just to name a few ideas. I love the concept because it incorporates design with technology and has a specific, user-generated purpose.

How are they being used?
These codes are popping up in marketing campaigns, both in traditional and interactive media partly because they allow marketing professionals to easily track response rates. They are being used in tradeshows, billboards, direct mail pieces, coupons and contests, and in guerrilla marketing campaigns. Use these codes to drive traffic to exclusive online content, offering prizes or other incentives. The majority of consumers may not being using these codes on a regular basis yet, but curiosity will make them check it out. Those that are already using them will be tech-savvy and more likely to visit your website, or be influenced by your social media campaign.

Well-known companies are using QR codes in various ways. Pepsi prints QR codes on bottles to direct customers to their website. Designers are using them on their mailers to give customers exclusive online content like runway videos and limited edition collections. Restaurants are using QR Codes to list product nutritional information on its packaging. Real Estate agents are using them on signage to provide details about the house for sale. The codes are also being used in unusual ways-food suppliers are using them to show where their product is grown and when it was harvested, an English version of "The Amazing Race" reality TV show is using the codes as part of the treasure hunt, and Japan has even put them on tombs to give background on the interred (creepy!)

So how can you use these codes for your small business?
You can drive traffic to your website by offering exclusive contests or discounts for QR code users. Track traffic to your website by using different codes on different marketing pieces, therefore knowing which piece has the best ROI (return on investment). Thank customers for their patronage and put one on receipts to offer a discount on their next purchase. Encode one with a Google map for your store location. Encode one with product reviews and information or price comparisons. Send the user to YouTube to see your online commercial. You can make it part of your campaign by placing them on t- shirts, business cards, billboards, or magnets. Or get creative, like Lego who made one out of lego blocks, and make the QR code the central part of your campaign.

If you still aren’t convinced about the future of QR Codes in your business marketing, let your customer tell you- In a recent study commissioned by ad agency MGH, 72 percent of smartphone users indicated that they would be likely to recall an ad with a QR code. Check out the whole study here: http://mghus.com/qr-code-survey-results. You can generate a QR code using a site like Kaywa.com, iCandy, or Stickybits. Kaywa.com will also provide the code reader for your phone, so will Barcode Scanner. You can install the app on your phone with ease.

KC Hart is the Director of Marketing & Communications for the Asheville Home Builders Association.PRAWNChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06227920801535026216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993466183663725680.post-67467358503462160772011-03-12T16:47:00.002-05:002011-03-12T16:51:14.744-05:00Time to renew your 2011 PRAWNC membership!
Hi! McLendon
Gold-nugget strategies mined from "Best of the Mountain" award winners was the topic of the roundtable discussion of the Public Relations Association of Western North Carolina (PRAWNC) at the organization's first member breakfast meeting Thursday, Aug. 12, at Buncombe County Television offices. The assembled team discussed best practices to gain precious recognition in the prestigious awards competition.

The Call for Entries is now available.

Bring home the gold on behalf of your own team with the collegial advice of Jill Yarnall with UNC-Asheville; Judy Rhew Davidson and Kathy Hughes with Buncombe County Government; Rick Prudhomme with Pardee Hospital, and Brenda Murphree with Clear Point Marketing. They, together with PRAWNC past-president Jennifer Perez, with Park Ridge Health, address the finer points of judging standards, and offer the following guidelines for a stellar showing.

Find out more about submissions in this year's featured categories, which include a new social media component.

Tip No. 1
Take your time

When beginning the submissions process, entrants need to read the entry guidelines and follow them carefully. Decide what categories in which to submit, and whether your entries are in-house versus agency products based on the provided definitions.

"Don't throw the entry together too fast," says Yarnall, known for her high performance press releases. "Go above and beyond, so that it's not just good. It needs to be unique in a certain way." To do this, she recommends leaving "plenty of time" to complete the entry process.

The final step of the entry process is to include a jpeg file of the work with submissions, Perez says.

Tip No. 2
Make the Entry Stand Out

One way to showcase a project's unique qualities is to include specific information, including the analytics on the product.

A rigorous proofing process stands the entry in good stead, says Prudhomme. He and Yarnall agree that showing measurable success, analytic information, return on investment (ROI), or other returns when submitting an award furthers this objective.

"Do it justice," Prudhomme urges. "Look at the entry as a project in itself. Evaluate the criteria and its effectiveness. Most importantly, evaluate the craft of the entry – the concept and process. Make certain yours is a professional presentation." Using the language from the Call for Entries assists in this latter endeavor, he suggests.

Tip No. 3
Proof Your Work

Once you've prepared the entry, reading the guidelines carefully, obtaining outside feedback could assist in gathering a competitive edge, the panel agreed. Murphree suggests culling "anything that's not award-winning work. If it's not award-winning in quality, one shouldn't consider submitting it regardless of category."

"Either the entry shows above and beyond performance, or we change it and make it better. If it doesn't have this quality – even if the project is good – we couldn't enter it," Hughes concurs.

Tip #4
Understand the Judges

Judges for Best of the Mountains are drawn from across the Western North Carolina region or the southeastern United States, according to Perez. "We do require they are a working member in the communications field. This would correlate to all fields, including print media, public relations, graphic design, and others who can speak to a broad spectrum of communications. Also, as a basic rule of thumb, the judges should not have any of their own work submitted into Best of the Mountains, nor should they have any clients submitted," she explains.

Entries are scored on a ten point system, with a maximum point total of 60, says Perez. Judges start with an average score of six in each of the ten criteria areas: creativity, innovation, planning, implementation, effectiveness, and overall evaluation. They, they may choose to grade up for superior work or down for below-average entries.

"We ask for comments and constructive feedback on the judging form," Perez notes.

Judges working in teams of two focus on the criteria and excellence of the submission during the judging process. They may reclassify entries they feel are entered into the wrong category, and may not find that a Best of the Mountains award is warranted in a given category.

Tip #5
Watch the winners and learn

If you give it your best shot, and your project doesn't place, what is a public relations pro to do? First, consider past and current winning entries, says Amy Fowler, 2010 PRAWNC chief of staff. "It really has to be great stuff to take Best of the Mountains."

Want to take "Best of the Mountains?" Download the submission guidelines now!PRAWNChttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06227920801535026216noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-993466183663725680.post-46183185492961327392010-08-03T21:30:00.001-04:002010-08-03T21:33:24.001-04:00The Best of the Mountains Awards BreakfastDo you plan to enter a top performing project for a "Best of the Mountains 2010" award?

Gain a competitive edge on your competition by joining past and current top award winners in a breakfast round table discussion at Buncombe County Government Television offices on Thursday, August 12, from 7:30-9 a.m.

But get your RSVP in early to finance@prawnc.org. University student memberships are also available at $25.

“To place creative communicators in like company only adds value to the entire corporation, the entire community,” says McLendon. “This gift is truly one which lends support to key public relations and marketing professionals now, and creates connections that may last a lifetime.”

Due to the promise of economic turnaround in 2010, PRAWNC also plans to extend the special offer to members whose dues are in arrears, bringing their membership current and welcoming them back into the organization.

“We’re all in this together,” says Betancourt. “We want each practitioner in Western North Carolina to be able to build a strong network ensuring individual as well as collective success. PRAWNC is committed to making exciting, meaningful connections possible for each of its members.”

New members receive a holiday card with notice of the gift and the giver. A personal letter of welcome from the president and a Certificate of Membership suitable for framing will arrive in January 2010. The limited offer becomes void after January 31, 2010.

#

Public Relations Association of Western North Carolina, or PRAWNC, is the region’s premier professional organization for public relations, marketing, advertising and communications professionals since 1983.
